Joel 2:12-17, (KJV),
“12 Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the Lord your God?15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.17 Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O Lord, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?18 Then will the Lord be jealous for his land, and pity his people.19 Yea, the Lord will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:…..21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the Lord will do great things.22 Be not afraid…..”
One of the twelve Minor Prophets, Joel wrote around the 9Th Century B.C, particularly in the reign of Joash (making Joel one of the earliest writing prophets). This passage was penned during a period of drought and pestilence (locusts) in his land. Joel's words encouraged his Jewish nation, as they do us today, when he said, "in short form," "in a nut shell," "in boiling it down," and "in a pig's eye" .....for Israel to GO BACK, THINK BACK, TURN BACK, HARK BACK, REACH BACK, COME BACK, GIVE BACK, and GET BACK TO GOD!
”Ooh rah,” Prophet Joel! “Atta boy!” “Way to go!”
And, for us today, this superbly superior, special, "soo-much-more-than-just-words,” “The Lord Will Do Great Things” Wednesday, may we all live as Joel admonished, by “Turning unto the Lord your God!”
"He is gracious and merciful;
slow to anger, and of great kindness!"
Enjoy your wonderful Wednesday--
Because the Lord will do great things,
Dear Lord and God, help me to not be afraid today. Teach me to keep fear behind me. Show me the “great things” that accompany Your terrific love. I thank You that Your promises are real and true. For those battling serious illness, replace their dread with devotion. For those undergoing difficult change, show them steadiness. For everyone feeling lonely, give them lasting love. I worship Your very name! I adore Your presence in my life! Go with me today in my ministry, my vocation, and my endeavors as my guide, my focus, and my “north star.” Thank You for Jesus! Thank You for eternal life. Forgive my faults. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
